The church at Barnitz waas build in 1845. At that time it was known as the
South Mountain Sabbath School. It was later renamed the Methodist Protestant
Congregation.
In the early 1900's, the church was given the name Pines Methodist Episcopal and was on a charge with the Mt. Holly Springs church with whom it shared pastors until 1951. On November 25, 1952, the name of the church was again changed, this time to Barnitz Methodist Church in honor of the name of the founding family of the local community. On Octoper 9, 1954, the Pines School building adjacent to the church grounds was purchased from the school district of Dickinson Township for the price of $2,500.00. This schoolhouse has been used since that time as a social hall. In 1954, Mrs. Hermie Barnitz awarded to the church congregation an adjoining property and dwelling for use as a parsonage. This is the dwelling adjacent to the present parsonage. (Audrey Shughart became the church historian in the year 2000.) |
